CareerSesh Weekly
I asked for 10000SEK more and got it
Here to thrive!
If you’re surprised to see this email … guess what? I am too!
Firstly- sorry for just disappearing like that. Every week I wanted to write something but the more time passed, the more I didn’t know what to say.
I went home to South Africa and got caught up with catching up( you know watching the rugby 🏉,weddings and sun etc..). But while that was happening I was also reflecting on what brings me fulfilment and how I’d like to carry on with CareerSesh. With limited feedback, I sort of had to go with my gut.
I wasn’t sure I would come back to the newsletter, however, I decided to take the direction of a publication that I wish I had in my early years of being in Sweden. I don’t want to just talk about job hunting or Migrationsverket (noted they are very important)- I also want to talk about other aspects that stabilise us like wealth 💰️ and personal growth.
I enjoy attending events and so I figured, to avoid writers block the main article(s) of each issue will be sharing learnings from network events like in the issue from our LinkedIn audio event and when I had a Veronika share her learnings from Stockholm Dual Career Network Academy.
I’ll be looking to others as well in the community to be mini journalists and share their experiences as they attend events. (Ping me if you want to participate in this)
I wish I had it all figured out- but it’s a journey. I just hope you’re willing to come along for the ride. Who knows? It could be something great!
We don’t need someone crazy. But one step short of crazy what do you get?

Food prices seemed to be stable the past few months with price having dropped earlier in the year. However now with bad harvest and increased costs a third of food items increase in grocery store.
There are tons of events to share. Let’s start with meeting the deputy major of Lund on 21st November at the weekly Get in touch and grow your network event
Online we have Lund University hosting “Finding a job as an international graduate" on the 21st November (our very own Sean Yue will be part of the panel) and a personal finance webinar on Saturday 18th November
Fair workplace
On October 26th, there was a Women in Tech Regatta event in Stockholm. One of the sessions was called “What would a Johan do” TM
A dynamic panel together with the audience discussing, reflecting and suggesting positive actions that can transform masculinity in the workplace for “non-Johans”.
Who is a Johan? Some characteristics of a “Johan” are privilege, typically middle age white men who don’t experience insecurity like others do. Because everyone else lives in “their world” they can behave inappropriately and be bold in the workplace.
We asked the Johan on stage what his experience was with the hiring process. He said he went through 3 rounds of interviews and when asked his salary preference, he requested 10,000 SEK higher than his last position because “why not?” - and he got it.
Communication, negotiation and salary were notable topics in this discussion. It was found that amongst other reasons, desperation and visa sponsorship play a significant role in “non-johans” being underpaid and under valued.
International bestselling author Lola Akinmade shares her honest and unfiltered experience of being offered an entry-level intern role despite her extensive experience in the USA. Although unfortunate it was assuring to know that people were not alone in their experiences, many share similar challenges and others have been able to stand up for themselves and receive fair treatment.
